Monrovia, Liberia –The Center will provide researchers, faculty, and students with access to patent databases, scientific literatures, and specialized training on intellectual property (IP). This initiative aims to strengthen applied research, innovation, and commercialization- helping transform academic ideas into viable products and services that drive national development.

With the signing held on September 30, 2025 at the University’s Main Campus, the University of Liberia officially joins a National TISC network that already includes the African Methodist Episcopal University, United Methodist University, Starz University, the Central Agricultural Research Institute, iCampus Liberia, and the Ministry of Health’s Division of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing intellectual property education and innovation, noting that the agreement paves the way for the introduction of a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property and eventually a Bachelor of Science program.

In her remarks, Hon. Garmai Koboi, Director General of LIPO, emphasized that the partnership underscores the Government of Liberia’s commitment to building innovation ecosystems within higher education institutions.

The LIPO’s DG noted that bringing TISCs to the University will ensure access to mentorship, legal protection, and practical tools needed to transform research into real-world impact.

Since its introduction in 2021, the TISCs program- implemented by LIPO in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has trained over 100 researchers on patent, trademark, and industrial design searches.

The initiative continues to play a key role in empowering innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to create value and contribute to Liberia’s sustainable development through intellectual property.
